For the past four decades, doctors have prescribed Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) drugs to women for the purpose of treating menopause symptoms, such as hot flashes, mood swings, night sweats and vaginal dryness. During this time, doctors were led to believe that long-term use of HRT drugs was also beneficial in preventing osteoporosis and heart disease. |

However, according to recent studies, this is not the case. In fact, these drugs have been found to increase the risks of:
- Breast cancer
- Ovarian cancer
- Heart attack/disease
- Stroke
- Blood clots
- Lupus
- Asthm

Prempro, Premain, Provera, Premphase, Estradiol and Medroxygrogesterone. |
Prempro
More than 6 million women take Prempro, which is a combination of estrogen and progestin. In 2002, The Women's Helth Initiative study involving HRT drugs was halted three years earlier than planned due to preliminary findings -- participants taking Prempro had an increased risk of developing breast cancer, stroke and blood clots. |

After these findings were released, a rational person would expect the pharmaceutical company who developed the drug to issue as recall. Instead, Wyeth, the Prempro manufacturer, issued guidelines cautioning against long-term use. Furthermore, the company revamped its recommended dosage by cutting it half. These are not the actions of a responsible company.
