There's a good reason that Tim McGinty, candidate for Cuyahoga County prosecutor, sounds a lot like Tim Misny, relentless TV plaintiff's lawyer.
McGinty's "I will make it right" TV commercial catch phrase, which harkens Misny's "I'll make them pay," was actually conceived by Misny.
"I have received emails and calls from people saying that McGinty may be plagiarizing and I should think about making him pay," said Misny.
What they don't know is that Misny attended law school with McGinty and, like McGinty, is a former assistant county prosecutor. McGinty is one of five candidates in the March 6 Democratic primary. There are no Republicans running.
Misny offered more than a campaign contribution when McGinty resigned his judgeship to run for prosecutor and asked Misny for his support.
"I said, 'Judge, I got your campaign slogan: I'll Make It Right,'" said Misny.
"The more we said it, the more it rang true. This is a very unique election in that his opponent, in part, is corruption in county government. Tim McGinty can't be bought and he can't be bribed."
Misny wrote and directed the McGinty commercials and coordinated the media buys with his local TV contacts. There are eight different 15-second commercials each with a McGinty supporter giving testimonials. And there's a unique twist, a 5-second spot, a strategy Misny employs with his daytime TV buys.
He claims he can make them pay. We'll find out soon whether he can make them vote.
